Despite advances in drug therapies for persons living with HIV/AIDS, struggles with poor health and isolation are a constant reality. At AIDS Vancouver, Care Team volunteers work to help provide support to assist our clients in living independently
For different people, this can mean different times of support. It can be as simple as sharing a cup of coffee, going for a walk or lending support during a difficult time. For others, it may require assistance with grocery shopping, laundry or cleaning which may be tasks which someone’s health does not permit them to do without difficulty. For families, volunteers support with caring for children, helping out with housework and homework, or helping new Canadians interact in our society.
No matter what the need, Care Team volunteers offer support to the individuals and families we work with and for, and can help combat the isolation which is so attached to the stigma of living with HIV.
What your money can buy:
$20 can help purchase cleaning supplies for those living on limited budgets and allows Care Team volunteers access to proper cleaning supplies to keep homes free from dirt and grime.
$20 can purchase an entrance to the Art Gallery, Zoological Society or cover the costs associated with taking a day trip to Lynn Canyon.
$50 can help us purchase children’s books and toys for the many children affected by HIV which Care Teams work with. Many children affected by HIV are affected by issues of both income and isolation and enjoy the chance to sit with their Care Team volunteer while doing homework or playing.
$100 helps purchase an outing for a family such as a picnic in the park, a visit to the beach or any other activities
$100 dollars can also help provide funds for the professional removal and disposal of old and infested furniture which may be a health risk to a client with a compromised immune system.
No money, but have lots of stuff?
- We are always looking for vacuum cleaners, rug cleaners, etc. for our program. Think of us before you toss your older models!
- Any old children’s books are welcome, especially those with simple English (for ESL learners).
- Contribute the most valuable asset of all, your time! Volunteer with Care Teams and help make a difference in the lives of others!
