Friends of May is an AIDS Vancouver initiative that pairs passionate volunteers with older adults living with HIV/AIDS. Friends of May offers the chance for cross-generational sharing of knowledge, experiences, activism, companionship, and fun.

If you are someone who is 55+, living with HIV/AIDS, and looking for some help around the house or looking for accompaniment on a scheduled visit or outing, Friends of May is here for you.

If you would like to volunteer with Friends of May and offer your time and support, Friends of May is the program for you.

Friends of May is named after one of AIDS Vancouver’s longest serving volunteers, May McQueen. She spent over two decades with us, saying, “Everybody needs to know that somebody gives a damn, and that’s what we’re for.” This program is a new take on past AIDS Vancouver programs known as the Buddy Program and Care Teams.

For 14 years, May shared a special bond with one of our clients. Together, they enjoyed peaceful walks in Stanley Park and shared a love of classical music. A friend of Vancouver’s HIV/AIDS community, we are proud to honour her legacy of compassion with Friends of May.
